KRAKATOA cloth

The hand embroidered Krakatoa cloth belongs to the Pandemic Series together with CALMA cloth and MELIFERA cloth

We are talking about a species that shut itself up in its homes to cause other pandemics. For example, stay-at-home orders limit the spread of the virus but can result in a dangerous situation for women with violent partners.

According to UN data, 50 women die every week in Europe due to the gender violence virus. One of three women in the world suffers sexual or physical violence.

Violence against women and girls constitutes a violation of human rights.

According to the UN, we are 60 years away from achieving equality between men and women. The pandemic has increased gender inequalities. Women occupy jobs that face greater job insecurity and also assume the burdens of reconciling work and family life.

The covid-19 pandemic is showing a higher mortality rate in men, however it is estimated that the economic and social impact is greater in them.

The Pandemic Rags Series seeks to revalue and decontextualize the entire narrative in which women fulfill assigned roles. The domestic space as the domain of women and embroidery as a feminine work come together. On the rag Krakatoa erupt and demand a place of honor.

The history of embroidery is the history of women; it has been relegated as domestic work despite being an artistic expression of great technical complexity and great ornamental character that occupies a relevant space since the Middle Ages.

Embroidery has been a symbol of high rank, opulence, domesticity, industriousness and femininity.

The hand-embroidered Krakatoa cloth uses the so-called needlework of textile art to express a kind of dualities, such as:

inside / outside, active / passive, strength / weak, domestic / fierce, luxurious / frugal, private / public, tradition / modernity.

In addition, the Krakatoa cloth uses a kitchen towel as a canvas where female dominance is decontextualized and shows that these historical roles undertake a sharp change in direction. The whole world is shaken; the kitchen towel no longer fulfills its function.

Krakatoa cloth is unique piece.
