SOTO II tapestry

The Soto II tapestry is another interpretation of textile art. From the Étude pour une série (1952-53) by kinetic artist Jesús Rafael Soto.

A series that has the influence of music, colours and the purity of geometry.

In Soto’s words: “Suddenly I was concerned to find how to give painting that level of truly universal language that music and mathematics had. If music codified its values, why couldn’t the visual arts do the same? » (Marc Collet, “O domínio musical de Soto”, en Soto [exhibition catalog] (Paris: Jeu de Paume, 1998).

Soto is a recognised plastic artist and one of the most important and generous of the 20th century. His work is full of sensitivity, serenity, humility and curiosity.

Likewise, music, movement and street art are constant themes in Soto’s work. Present in the artist’s first series, Étude pour une série (1952-53), which have been the inspiration for the Soto I and II tapestries.

Serial music is part of this Soto collection. From the serial idea Soto chose 8 colours to transfer these codes to painting. Thus: 3 primary, 3 secondary, black and white.

The Soto II tapestry is inspired by a work done with lacquer on wood.

Fiber art uses textiles and in this case cotton ropes. Soto II tapestry assemble with coloured ropes: ecru, white, yellow, red and brick red.

The interpretation of textile art is horizontal dots that play with color and shape.

The cross knot is the protagonist of this piece. Horizontal knotted interweaves colours and lines in a clean and simple way.

Learning from the extensive work of the plastic artist Soto is a way to grow as an artist. Inspired by a unique and unrepeatable creator.
