The mother from Picasso’s Guernica, who screams while holding her dead son on the left side of the canvas, is the protagonist of this piece. Undoubtedly, a recognisable silhouette and likely familiar to anyone on planet Earth who has lived through or witnessed the horrors of war.
According to an interpretation found on Wikipedia, the symbol of the mother with the dead child is situated beneath the bull, with her face turned towards the sky in a gesture or cry of pain. Her tongue is sharp like a stiletto, and her eyes are shaped like tears. She holds her already deceased son in her arms. The child’s eyes lack pupils, as he is dead. The iconographic model of this figure is, according to critics, the Pietà, which is the representation, common in Christian art, of the Virgin Mary holding her dead son in her arms.

I was born in America and have transported this sorrowful figure to an environment where nature observes her and suffers at her feet the ravages of death and loss. Therefore, creating the Hessian El Duelo as a hand-stitched collage is another powerful symbol of the roles imposed on women, as silent caregivers in the domestic sphere and also on the battlefields.
